The absence of sound produced a wave of heat that wrapped around his heart and a flash of chills behind his neck, bringing the fine hairs to attention. He wanted to live a delusion momentarily: perhaps this was simply a nightmare. Assisted by the doctor, she moved down from the bed, holding onto the bump which she had fed for so many months. He watched her expression intently, as the doctor spoke, the words floating curiously in the air, their mental echoes cycling like a broken record. He placed an arm around her as they walked out and seated themselves.
